Wallpaper and paint. It used to be that those were your two choices when it came to your walls. Kind of sad that for something that this so prominent, there are so few choices. Not anymore. There are a wide array of materials that you can incorporate on your walls. Here are some ideas to wake up your walls.

Kitchens are a terrific place to showcase a dynamic tile or bold pattern. Why? There is much less wall space than other rooms as they are taken up with cabinets and appliances. A perfect way to do this is with a minimalist look for the counters and cabinets and a dramatic effect on the walls.

Glass or mixed mosaic tiles provide a pattern of visual interest in a modern space. Other great choices are rectangular subway tiles, which have a classic appeal.

Marble – One look that has classic appeal is the look of marble. While there's legitimate reasons for not installing on your counter or floors, you could install marble on your walls and never face the fear of staining or scratching this beautiful material.

I love wood on walls as a look. This is so much more beautiful than the wood paneling of the 1970s. I've been seeing lots of hardwoods used on walls in restaurants that are very modern and sleek. They certainly bring a bit of warmth to any room no matter if they are on the floor or the walls.

All of these wall materials make for a stunning visual appeal to any room, but don't overdo it with design in other parts of the room. They work well when paired with more neutral or minimalist designs. For example, if you have a mixed mosaic wall pattern, then you probably don't want to choose a tile flooring that has a ton of color variation as it will appear to busy.

What materials are you most interested in using to wake up your walls? Which room will you tackle first?
